Despite the English name of its predecessor, the Ministry of Communications (MOC), the Ministry is not responsible for non-transport communications such as telecommunications, broadcasting, radio frequency and spectrum licenses or broadband communications (Internet). Its English name is inherited from previous Chinese governments. During the Qing and Republic of China periods, this ministry was in charge of postal, transportation and telegraphy services. During the People's Republic of China period, however, the administration of postal and telegraphy services were passed to other ministries and only the road and water transportation administrations were kept and its English name was kept unchanged due to historical reasons.
